Our Story

How a skating spot in Surulere became a fish farm

Bright and Hussaini at the Hubright fish ponds

The Name

HUssaini + BRIGHT = HUBRIGHT

Our name is the simplest thing about us. We took the first part of Hussaini and joined it to Bright.

We didn’t plan it as a message. But say it slowly, and you’ll hear it: Hub. Right. The right hub.

That’s what we set out to be. A place where good food comes together- from our ponds, from local farmers, from our factory- and goes out to your table, clean, safe and ready.

It is also a small reminder of something bigger. Two Nigerians who could have stayed in their own lanes chose to share one name. Every pack that carries it carries that choice too.

01

Chapter one: The boy who kept fish

Long before Hubright, there was a boy who couldn’t sit still. Bright Peter raised chickens. He grew plants and He kept fish. He watched them grow and wanted to know why some did better than others.

That curiosity never left. As a young man, he interned at a catfish and poultry feed store in Ketu, Lagos and spent his holidays working at a neighbouring pond, learning how to raise fish from fingerlings to table size. He wasn’t just working. He was studying.

02

Chapter two: The man at the rink

Across town, at a skating club in the Stadium in Surulere, there was an older career professional the young skaters all knew. Hussaini Kwari had travelled the world, built a serious career in finance, and still showed up for the young teenagers on wheels. He gave advice. When someone was stuck, he helped.

Bright was one of those skaters. Hussaini noticed him. Not because he was the best on skates, but because he moved fast in everything he did.

03

Chapter three: “Give me a few days”

When Bright spoke to Hussaini about starting a fish farm, there was no money for land or any start up materials. Most people would have waited. Bright went looking.

Within days, he came back with good news. A kind landlord had agreed to let them use a piece of land at Beer Land, free, for two years.

Hussaini remembers that moment well. That speed, that can-do spirit, was all the proof he needed. He had always believed in backing driven young people. Here was one standing right in front of him.

04

Chapter four: ₦348,000

In April 2022, they both put in ₦348,000. That was the whole start-up budget.

They set the place up, stocked 2,000 fish. They contributed money at intervals to feed and grow the fishes. The first harvest went well, and so did the next. Soon they were raising batches of 12,000 juvenile fish at a time.

No investors. No loans. Every naira of profit went straight back into the farm. They called it delayed gratification. Most people would call it patience.

05

Chapter five: What it means

A young hustler and a seasoned Profesional. Different ages, different faiths, different roots. On paper, they had little in common.

But Nigeria has always been bigger than what’s on paper. Some of our strongest bonds are the ones nobody arranged — the neighbour who becomes family, the stranger who becomes a mentor, the friend from the rink who becomes a partner.

Hubright is one of those bonds. It just happens to grow fish, and now other food commodities.
